Coverage

Hey all! This post is probably going to be short and sweet as I'm smack-dab in the middle of about five different projects. That's also probably the reason why I'm having trouble coming up with ideas for posts. Ahh! Too much going on!

Okay, now that the mini-freakout is over, I'd like to ask some questions: what are your favorite book covers? Why are they your favorites? And if you're a writer, what kind of ideas do you come up with when you think up a book cover?

This is especially interesting to me because I've never been very good at coming up with cover ideas for my own works. It awes me that there are people out there who can come up with designs down to the smallest detail.

Any thoughts? Cover ides? Etc.?

  1. To be honest, I only realised that book covers were such a big deal in the last year after I started my writing blog. hehe. So I haven't really thought much about it. I do recall that some of my fave book covers ever were Isobelle Carmody's LEGENDSONG covers. The originals, like this one: http://www.qbd.com.au/products/l/6489/9780670866489.jpg and this one: http://eidolon.net/inprint/images/darksong.jpg. I liked them especially 'cause of the format my copies were in, with their matte covers.

  2. I'm going to have to think on this and get back to you. I've also been a little distracted with...well, everything. I haven't given the topic much thought.

  3. Well, you only have to think of your own cover idea if you're self-publishing. I had to take my mock-ups down when I got an agent!

For book covers. Ooo, let's see. I love HOURGLASS by Myra McIntire, and IMAGINARY GIRLS by Nova Ren Suma. POSSESSION by Elana Johnson is a cool one too. Also MATCHED by Ally Condie. They are kinda symbolic figures, capturing the essence of the book. :)

  4. I've done a couple of blogs on the subject of book covers... primarily in the spy genre, since that's also what I write in.

I'm lucky enough to have my own designer, who did a tremendous job with mine.

Personally, one of my all time favourite covers is for Jack Higgins' original release of Angel of Death. Black background, angel tombstone sculpture illuminated. Looks great.
