Zoom actually has a specific year that it showed up: 1886.
It’s what’s known as an “echoic” word,
which is basically when a word is made from the onomatopoeia of something, I
guess in this case quickly closing in on something. Maybe? It’s not clear. It
actually gained popularity because the first aviators used it (I guess if
anyone zooms around it’s one of them). It wasn’t until 1936 that the zoom lens
was invented, taking its name from what the aviators did.
